2008 One Day Of Service Recap
Another Weekend of Fun and Excitement!!

With the weather’s approval and over 300 volunteers in attendance, for the second year in a row, Shawnee Lodge put on a tremendously successful One Day of Service at Johnson’s Shut-ins State Park and nearby parks in southeastern Missouri on April 4-6, 2008. The weekend was a fun and exciting experience for all, as Scouts participated in many fun activities over the course of the weekend in addition to meaningful service projects at Johnson’s Shut-Ins, Tom Sauk, and Fort Davidson State Parks. While camping at S bar F, Scouts participated in a Guitar Hero tournament as well as other activities such as football and volleyball. All participants also received the 2008 One Day of Service patch and free meals. At the service sites, our impact was extensive, as we continued to build off our efforts from 2007. During our service, Scouts removed invasive species from the fen, built and improved miles of new trails, and planted hundreds of trees among many other tasks. By the end of the weekend, the Department of Natural Resources was already asking us back for 2009!

Overall the project was a resounding success! We all had a great amount of fun, and the Department of Natural Resources was very appreciative of our efforts in improving the state parks of Missouri. Thank you to all who participated in the event and for making the event worthwhile and an experience to be remembered. We were glad that this event was just as exciting, if not more, than the 2007 One Day of Service, and we hope that all of you will be able to help us build off this event for another exciting experience at the 2009 One Day of Service!

History of the One Day of Service

Adopted by the Central Region in December of 1999 and introduced in 2000, the One Day of Service program, or more popularly referred to as simply One Day, is an opportunity for every lodge in the region to do meaningful service to their communities all on one day. One of the main points in our Order's current Strategic Plan is to give "Broader Service to Scouting and the Community".

The One Day program directly tackles this issue and broadens that range of cheerful service we do as Arrowman. We take a step out of our council camps and go back to the roots of the Scouting program with a deep commitment to the community we live in. Not only are we helping to achieve the goals of our Strategic Plan, we are also setting the example for and encouraging that spirit of community service in Scouts and Scouters around the Region.

Our work in this program will be beneficial to our lodges, our councils, our units and fellow Scouts and Scouters alike. For these reasons, the Central Region One Day Committee has once again selected the theme of "Service Above Self" for the program.
